T-Slot Aluminum vs. Welded Steel

So you're looking to fabricate some framing and you're torn between using t-slot aluminum or welded steel. In this article, we'll examine the two side-by-side so you can decide which one is the best choice for your project.

Spoiler Alert: It's t-slot aluminum, hands down.

Weight

Aluminum is roughly one-third the weight of steel.

Welding Required?

Because of their modular nature, t-slot aluminum frames don't require welding. They can be assembled with simple hand tools.

Cost

Aluminum costs slightly more than steel in raw materials. However, steel requires more tooling and more labor, making t-slot aluminum framing less costly overall.

Strength

Steel does yield a higher tensile strength than aluminum (50,000 psi vs. 36,000 psi). However, this strength comes at a cost of increased weight (see above). In terms of strength-to-weight ratio, aluminum is almost two times stronger than steel at the same weight.

Machining Required?

While we do offer standard and custom tooling services for our t-slot aluminum extrusions, they certainly aren't required. Steel frames, on the other hand, usually require cutting and drilling before they can be used.

Corrosion Resistance

Aluminum is clearly superior to steel in terms of resistance to corrosion. Steel needs to be primed and painted but aluminum has a natural clear oxide film that protects it.

Additional Benefits of Aluminum T-Slots

  • Aluminum is an excellent conductor of electricity, as well as cold and heat.
  • Aluminum is more flexible than steel so it can flex under heavy loads or spring back from the shock of impact. It also allows for more intricate shapes in your designs.
  • Aluminum extrusion t-slots are modular so you easily adjust them, adding connections and joining profiles as necessary.
