80/20 Incorporated uses their own product throughout their facility for many applications such as workstations, guarding, enclosures and material handling. Another innovative application is the barrel hoist used in the Anodize Department which uses various chemicals that harden the outer surface of the aluminum giving their product a scratch and weather resistant finish.
As directed by the Environmental Protection Agency, 80/20 installed a containment curb when they built their facilities in order to quarantine a potential spill to a small area if one were to occur. While this 8” curb is great for keeping spills in, it also presents a challenge when transporting supplies into the area.
"We needed a solution that could lift any size barrel up and over the curb," says 80/20 Facility Safety Manager, Mike Downam, "We also knew that we had no room for a forklift, and some barrels weighed over 1000 pounds. They were just too heavy to move by hand. We also needed something that could be moved out of the way when it was not in use."
Without batting an eye over the project stipulations or weight requirements 80/20's team of designers took the specifications and designed a custom barrel hoist using mainly 3030 and 3060 extrusions. They also added some heavy duty casters, placed a floor brake on either side and added an aftermarket hoist system to complete the project.
"It turned out to be exactly what we needed." says Downam. "There is no deflection even under the heaviest load and when we're done transferring our materials it tucks back out of the way. I definitely feel safer knowing this tool is being used in our facility."
